Ear Culture

Is there a clia waived test for ear culture?

SuperCoder Answered Mon 05th of August, 2013 05:31:05 AM

The test (87070) is performed to identify the type of organism and its abundance in the sample given by a patient.
Scenario: A physician sends an ear discharge specimen for culture.
Code it: You would report 87070 for the test. This is not considered a "screening" test because instead of screening for a particular organism, the ear culture could presumably isolate a variety of different organisms that the lab would then identify.

87070, shows culture as the description - which is not CLIA Waived

What procedure code can be used for a Clia Waived office?

There is not a CLIA waived test for ear culture. If you’re culturing discharge from the ear to see if a pathogen grows and to presumptively identify that organism, the correct code for the culture would be 87070, but this is not a CLIA waived test. There is no procedure code for this test that you can do in a CLIA waived lab -- 87070 must be performed in a lab with a CLIA license for higher complexity tests.
