If e-coli organism is used on UTI can be bill cpt 87505? If we cannot bill CPT 87505 which other cpt code can be billed when E-COLI is run for UTI

Hi Apurva,

Use CPT code 87086, if quantitative colony count of E. Coli was identified in urine culture. If along with E. Coli multiple pathogens were identified, use CPT code 87088 for presumptive identification of each organism.

Use CPT code 87505 for detection of 3 - 5 infectious pathogens (E. Coli and other pathogens) through nucleic acid using reverse transcription and multiplex amplified probe techniques. Use CPT code 87506 for detection of 6- 11 infectious pathogens and CPT code 87507 for detection of 12- 25 infectious pathogens.

Use the appropriate CPT code from above as per your documentation.

can we bill CPT 87798 for ECOLI for amplified probe technique in UTI test run
SuperCoder Answered Mon 30th of September, 2019 04:26:07 AM

Hi Apurva,

It would be appropriate code to use if the sample used for testing UTI through amplified probe technique is urine. If the sample used was stool, then the appropriate CPT codes would be 87505 - 87507 as stated above.
