Do I need a modifier for 2nd surgery code?

Sandra Posted Fri 16th of October, 2015 16:47:43 PM

If an operative laparoscopy for lysis of adhesions was done plus a hysteroscopy for resection of endometrial polyps was done, Do I use a modifier for the 2nd procedure or not?
I was gonna bill 58661 as primary and 58558 as secondary but not sure if a modifier 51 should be attached to the hysteroscopy or not?

The correct codes for the procedure are 58660 and 58558. CCI edits do not show any bundling in between them. So, you can report these codes together. Whereas modifier 51 can be added because of multiple procedure.

So if CCI edits don't show these codes to be bundled does that mean a modifier is not needed?

CCI edit relationship usually check for bundling between the procedure, for which modifier 59 is used. Whereas, modifier if for multiple procedure, which is done in your case. So, you can append 51 modifier with CPT 58558.
