Digital Block for Foreign Body Removal

Barbara Posted Wed 25th of August, 2010 03:44:04 AM

If a patient comes in with foreign body in his finger and they inject lidocaine to remove foreign body without an incision can you charge 64450? or is injection included in the E/M? Does anyone know where I can find infomation on this topic? Thanks in advance!

No you cannot report 64450 because this is for peripheral nerve blcok management. So in this case I can only suggest a E/M code and for the injection you can report J3490 or you need to inquire your payer.

So, if the injection 64450 was for pain management with no other procedure then it could be charged?

No this injection is meant to be administered when a surgery is performed like I&D, Laceration repair of eyelid, Extensive wound care including debridement, etc. There are codes for administration of Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection through subcutaneous, intramuscular and intra-arterial i.e. 96372 and 96373.
