Diagnostic Block coding

Dana Posted Tue 12th of November, 2019 14:20:17 PM
I have a provider that is going to do a diagnostic block around the S1/L5 bilaterally to determine if a screw in the spine is what is causing the patient's severe pain. The provider is asking for what procedure code would be used for this procedure.

Hi Dana,

Thank you for your question.

The appropriate code to bill for the above procedure will be CPT 64493 with modifier 50. Fell free to ask for any further query.

I that for painful hardware too? I had read another article to use an unlisted code.

Hi Dana,

It is still a diagnostic procedure when provider is asking for the procedure that will determine if a screw in the spine is the cause of pain. It will be appropriate to use CPT code (64493) than to go for unlisted.
