Dexamthasone IM

Lila Posted Tue 10th of January, 2017 13:33:05 PM
I have a few providers that want to give Dexamethasone IM orally. How would you bill for that? I see the code J8540, but the actually medication only says inject-able on the bottle. Can we still bill the J8540 for oral?

Hi,

As per the query, J8540 is an appropriate code for Dexamethasone, oral, 0.25 mg.

The route of administration is also mentioned in the code itself.

Sharing with you an example of the drug with NDC number, indicating that the drug is administered via Oral route without mentioning of “inject-able on the bottle”.

Drug: Dexamethasone

Dosage Form Name: SOLUTION

Route: ORAL

NDC 0054-3177-57

Thank you!
