Debridement

Diane Posted Wed 05th of October, 2016 11:03:25 AM
I can not find an accurate code for arthrotomy right total knee with debridement of right total knee, entire thickness of the capsule and extensor mechanism. A lateral release was again performed to balance the extensor mechanism. It was thought originally the patellar button had come off, it more than likely subluxed. Brownish materal was debrided, gelatinous type infiltrate throughout the capsule was debrided. Range of motion done, capsule closed and subcutaneous tissue. I have been looking at codes under knee and also codes in the debridement section but do not see anything that really fits. THank you for your advise.

Hi,

As per NCCI 2016, Debridement of tissue in the surgical field of another musculoskeletal procedure is not separately reportable. However, debridement of tissue at the site of an open fracture or dislocation may be reported separately with CPT codes 11010-11012.

In this case, CPT code 11012 is the most appropriate code that can be used for debridement performed to the level of bone.

Also, the cpt code for lateral release and treatment of subluxation is 27422.

Hope this helps!
