CPT for posterior approach vertebrectomy (corpectomy) at L2

Vicki Posted Thu 26th of July, 2012 23:44:40 PM

The doctor is stating that he did a posterior approach vertebrectomy at L2.
The closest code I can find is 63102. Is this correct or is there another code.

I agree.

The surgeon is able to remove the posterior spinal structures (such as the lamina and facet joints) along with the anterior spinal structures (vertebral bodies and discs) and their associated pathology. CPT code 63102 is used to report spinal decompression with vertebral corpectomy using this technique:

63102Vertebral corpectomy (vertebral body resection), partial or complete, lateral extracavitary approach with decompression of spinal cord and/or nerve root(s) (eg, for tumor or retropulsed bone fragments); lumbar, single segment.
