cpt for fb of eye

Tammy Posted Mon 11th of August, 2014 12:54:23 PM

What is the correct cpt for the attempted removal of a foreign body in the eye. In this case the eyelid was everted and examined, opthane used for a topical anesthetic in the eye. No fb seen but there was a superficial abrasion of the cornea.

The template is generating an incorrect code of 28190 but I need to know what the correct one would be.

Thank you!

Thank you for your question.

The code range for removal of foreign body in the eye is 65205-65265.
The codes below would best fit your procedure:
65220
Removal of foreign body, external eye; corneal, without slit lamp

65222
Removal of foreign body, external eye; corneal, with slit lamp

You can still use these codes if the FB was not actually located, you want to make sure you use the appropriate diagnosis codes however...coding the symptoms, or abrasion, rather than foreign body removal.
