What CPT code do I use for removal of a lens (IOL)
SuperCoder Answered Wed 17th of July, 2019 03:03:04 AM

Hello Marina,

Thank you for your question.

As per the above presented limited documentation, find the below mentioned codes for removal of lens (IOL).

66920-Removal of lens material intracapsular

66930-Removal of lens material intracapsular, for dislocated lens

Note: You are advised to kindly go through your detailed procedure note and relate the work performed in each procedure along with the appropriate diagnosis, to report the most appropriate code.

Hope that helps!

Would these be used for the removal of an intraocular lens (foreign body)?
SuperCoder Answered Wed 24th of July, 2019 07:47:56 AM

Hello Marina,

Thank you for your question.

The above suggested CPT® codes 66920 and 66930 were for removal of lens material; intracapsular.

There are specific CPT® codes for Removal of Foreign Body Procedures on the Eyeball (Code Range: 65205-65265).

Basis the above stated query, for removal of intraocular lens (foreign body), the appropriate code would be CPT® code 65235- Removal of foreign body, intraocular; from anterior chamber of eye or lens.

In this procedure, the provider examines the anterior chamber and retina. He identifies the location of an intraocular foreign body. He inserts forceps to grasp the foreign body and remove it from the eye. He examines the area and then closes the injury site with sutures.

Also, have a look at below CPT® codes, for removal of foreign body; intraocular.

CPT® code 65260

Removal of foreign body, intraocular; from posterior segment, magnetic extraction, anterior or posterior route

CPT® code 65265

Removal of foreign body, intraocular; from posterior segment, nonmagnetic extraction

Hope that helps!
