cpt code 55250 and pathology

Chandra Posted Tue 24th of February, 2015 13:43:57 PM

When a vasectomy is done in the office cpt code 55250 and the vas deferens is sent to the hospital for pathology. Is this a separate charge for the patient? Or what should be done with the deferens? We know that they must be kept for several years.

Hi, thank you for the query.
When vasectomy is done, only post operative semen examination(s) is included, in which all semen specimens needed to determine when the patient has become azoospermic or sterile, with no sperm seen on a semen specimen smear.
Except this, all services will be billed separately and the specimen will remain with pathology lab as long it required to be in the lab.

Thank you
