CPT 45100 multiple times

SuperCoder Posted Mon 14th of December, 2009 14:17:46 PM

CPT Code 45100: Rectal Bx- if you have three, do you bill this code x 3 units "OR" is this single or multiple biopsies?

Alan Answered Mon 14th of December, 2009 15:23:14 PM

If all the 3 samples for biopsy were taken during a single session, through the same incision, then code 45100 is to be billed only once, and not thrice.

If the specimens were taken in three different and separate sessions, or through separate incisions, then the CPT can be coded and billed thrice.
