Couples Therapy Coding

Karen Posted Tue 17th of January, 2017 12:33:52 PM
What psychotherapy CPT code would be the correct code to use for Couples Therapy? I was thinking 90847?

Hi Karen,

Family therapy is recognized by two CPT codes: 90846 and 90847. When the patient is present in the room, you use cpt code 90847. For example, if a husband with depression is the patient, yet the wife is also present during therapy, 90847 is most likely the appropriate code.

If the patient is not present – ie you’re talking with just the spouse or parents of the patient- you use CPT code 90846.

Also, you need to check with your payer if they cover these codes. Sometimes the service you provide is simply not covered by the insurance policy; it’s not considered medically necessary. Hope it helps.
