colovaginal fistula

Nicole Posted Tue 07th of February, 2017 15:35:02 PM
My provider is doing a sigmoid colectomy (44145), small bowel resection (44120), splenic flexure mobilization (44139) and a resection of a colovaginal fistula. I am having a difficult time location a code for the fistula portion. What would be the appropriate code for the resection of the colovaginal fistula? Or would the work be inclusive with the colectomy and the small bowel resection? Thank You,

As per NCCI edits “If an excised section of intestine includes a fistula tract, a fistula closure code should not be reported separately. Closure of the fistula is included in the excision of intestine.”

So, if colovaginal fistula was resected from the sigmoid colon, on which colectomy was performed, then colovaginal fistula would not be separately reported and it will be considered inclusive in the CPT code of sigmoid colectomy.
