coding occipital nerve and medical branch nerve

Mike Posted Fri 24th of May, 2013 16:46:12 PM

Patient had a third occipital nerve and third medial branch nerve block.
My understanding from what I have read is I can only bill 64490 once per level no matter how many nerves are injected. Is this still true?

True.Report 64490 for the Third Occipital Nerve

Since location dictates your choice of code, you should confirm with the physician that 64490 is a right code for the injection performed on the TON. Since the descriptor of code 64490 rightly defines the single level procedure of injection on the 'paravertebral facet joint', you would report this code for the TON injection procedures.
