Coding Contraceptive

Jamie Posted Wed 25th of March, 2020 15:34:53 PM
If a patient is coming in due to heavy menses (N92.0) and is prescribed a Nuvaring. Would is be appropriate to code Z30.015 - Encounter for initial prescription of vaginal ring hormonal contraceptive even if it is not being prescribed for birth control?

Thanks for your question.

Since the patient reason for visit is heavy menses then N92.0 Excessive and frequent menstruation with regular cycle appears appropriate to use. But, if the patient would have came for heavy menses and encounter for birth control then code N92.0 and Z30.015 can be coded together. Also,, please check for the payer policy for the billing.

Hope this helps.
