Coding 61626 twice

Leorah Posted Sat 21st of January, 2017 17:16:45 PM
I would like to code 61626 for the right and left sides of the brain. What are the modifiers I should add? I placed 61626-RT and 61626-59,LT, but the second code was denied. Any suggestions?

For the procedure of transcatheter permanent occlusion or embolization (eg, for tumor destruction, to achieve hemostasis, to occlude a vascular malformation), percutaneous, for which you are billing CPT 61626, with this code modifiers RT and/or LT is not applicable, reason being the procedure is for head or neck (extracranial, brachiocephalic branch) - so it is not suggested to append laterality modifier with this code. Since you have performed the procedure twice, so this can be billed with 2 units: 61626 X 2, as the MUE allowed by the CMS of the procedure is 2. Do NOT append modifier RT or LT with the CPT code.
