Cluneal nerve injection using Sarapin

Allison Posted Wed 23rd of July, 2014 12:29:52 PM

The neuro surgeon states he injected 5 cc Sarapin in the region of the cluneal nerve but billed 64640 and commercial ins rejected. Injection was through Iliac crest for pain in gluteal region. Is there another CPT he should be using for this type of injection?

Code 64640 seems to be correct for the sarapin injection into a nerve. What denial reason have they given?
Most commercial insurance do not cover sarapin injection as it is a homoeopathic drug.

Thanks !!

Thank you. I have a feeling this payer doesn't cover that drug. The denial reason was "non covered not medically necessary"

Your are welcome. Yes, many payers does not cover it.
