Closure of a suboccipital pseudomeningocele

Caralee Posted Tue 13th of November, 2012 19:59:48 PM

The surgeon reopened the suboccipital region were there was a small pseudomeningocele in the infeior aspect of the opening. Then opened the facia and muscles. Removed the scalp flap and found a pinhole in the superior aspecct on the right side where the CSF was coming under pressure. It was patched w/ Dura-Guard then applied DuraSeal. I need help finding the appropriate CPT code. 61619 is not correct nor is 63707 since that is in the spinal region.

I can see where parts of 61343 might apply, but wonder if it strays too much from the actual procedure to report, even with modifier 52. I'm wondering if the best choice might be 64999, even though coders don't like to report 'unlisted' codes unless absolutely necessary. The description for 63707 seems to fit, although it's for the spinal region, as noted in the question. That might be a good code to use for comparison for reimbursement purposes when reporting 64999.
