Chronic drainage forearm wound

Karen Posted Tue 24th of May, 2016 12:43:41 PM
Surgeon did a tissue transfer(CPT 14040). Trying to determine correct diagnosis code: He states in his op note "Chronic drainage from Rt forearm wound." The patient previously has had debridement surgeries for infection and there is no sign of infection now. The patient currently has a chronic drainage in the forearm. Please note that the patient has NOT HAD AN INJURY of any kind. Thanks.

Hi, ICD code S51.801S is appropriate for the above scenario.

Ok thanks. I guess I am a little confused as why we would use a Dx code from section 19 which is for Injury. Can you clarify since this problem was not due to any injury?

Hi Marianne, It is stated that there is no infection, hence the post operative complication code cannot be suggested. Also, the code above covers all the unspecified condition due to which drainage is occurring.
