Chondromalacia VS. Osteoarthritis

Angela Posted Fri 07th of August, 2015 17:20:37 PM

Can you use diagnosis code 715.16 Osteoarthritis of the lower leg when in the dictation the doctor states patient has chondromalacia? The doctor states in the dictation that patellofemoral arthritis and chondromalacia are pretty much the same.

Well, you are thinking clinically where patellofemoral arthritis and chondromalacia are almost same conditions, but still with some differences. However, in coding pattern it is separately described and mention. So, use ICD 715.46 for patellofemoral arthritis and ICD 717.7 for chondromalacia patella. Hope it helps!
