Can two surgeons bill critical and neonate care on the same dates of service

Janet Posted Fri 31st of January, 2014 11:14:12 AM

Pediatric Surgeon performs surgery on neonate (90 day global). Neonatologist is following patient on a daily basis with cpt 99469. Pediatric surgeon is also following this critical patient on a daily basis. Can the Pediatric surgeon bill 99291 for these services on the same dates of service as the Neonatologist is billing 99469. The pediatric surgeons notes meet all the requirement for billing cpt 99291.

If the pediatric surgeon is providing specialty pediatric critical care services that the neonatologist cannot provide, they would appropriately bill the 99291-99292 codes for their work. Double dipping for the critical care work would not be appropriate.
