Biopsy with incision

Clifford Posted Mon 12th of July, 2010 13:25:24 PM

If you report 21501, Incision and drainage, deep abscess or hematoma, soft tissues of neck or thorax, and you send a specimen for analysis, can you also bill 21550, biopsy, soft tissue of neck or thorax?

Generally, every CPT code that end up with an excision or I&D includes biopsy if a specimen. So in this case also you cannot report 21501 and 21550 together. These codes can only be used when there are two seperate incisions.
