I work for a mental health facility in California and one of our providers does two services in one day. Can I bill out code 90847 and 90837 on the same day?

Yes, both codes (90837 and 90847) can be billed on the same date of service. Just need to ensure the services are provided in different sessions on the same day. e.g. Psychotherapy provided to the patient in the morning whereas family psychotherapy session taken in the evening on the same date. Use modifier 59 or XE (separate encounter) with CPT code 90837 to differentiate between two visits.

Hi- Thank you for answering my question. I would be billing on a UB04 and so would I put both codes on the same claim form? Would I put code 90847 on the first line and 90837 on the second line with modifier 59 or XE?

Professional service codes should always be billed on HCFA 1500 form. You being the provider should bill CPT codes 90837 and 90847 on HCFA 1500 form. Ensure you append modifier XE with CPT code 90837.
Bill in the manner mentioned below:
90837-59 or XE

Last question why is it that 90847 goes on top and 90837 goes on the bottom? Is it possible to do codes 90837, 90847, and 90853 on the same day?

Please be noted you should bill CPT code 90837 as the primary code followed by 90847. The reason being CPT code 90837 has highest RVU than CPT code 90847 and hence should be billed as the primary code.
Yes, you can bill CPT codes 90837, 90847 and 90853 on the same day provided you justify the reason of having all the 3 visits on the same day. All visits should be in seperate sessions.
