billing of 96372

Cheryll Posted Thu 09th of April, 2015 08:20:52 AM

My question is: Can a 96372 injection code be billed without a J code if the pt does not supply the meds, and will a payer just pay without knowing what med was injected.

Thanks for your question. The procedure code 96372; Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection (specify substance or drug); subcutaneous or intramuscular can be billed without the specific J code for the drug. There are some payers that will not pay without knowing what drug was administered. In that case, if you are not billing for the drug you would need to submit the appropriate J code with a zero charge. You should always check your payer policies but most payers will pay for the administration if billed alone. Hope this helps.
