Billing multiple CPT's in speech '92507' with '92609'

Nechemia Posted Mon 23rd of July, 2012 14:39:50 PM

What is the correct way to bill speech therapy session split between '92507' 25 minutes and '92609' (use of speech device) 10 minutes, we have been billing 1 unit of each and gotten reimbursed FFS for both procedures (the second procedure discounting of course)
Is this legitimate, considering that speech services are not timed units? Is '92507' inclusive of '92609'? If not ,what would be the minimum for a second procedure to be billed?

Hi, Nechima,

Per the Correct Coding Initiative version 18.2, effective July 1, 2012, code 92507 is a column 2 code for 92609, but a modifier is allowed in order to differentiate between the services provided. ASHA indicates the appropriate modifier is 59. I am asking ASHA for an example/circumstances that would make overriding the edit with modifier 59 appropriate. I will post any further information as I receive it.

Sincerely,
Jen Godreau, CPC, CPMA, CPEDC
