Billing for Hot and Cold Snare biopsies

Kathy k Posted Wed 12th of August, 2015 19:15:00 PM

DX: screening colonscopy
Procedure: Colonscopy with hot and cold snare biopsies.

Could we bill this as 45385 for the hot snare and 45385 w/ modifier XS for the cold snare?

Polyps were removed in ascending colon, 2 polyps removed in the transverse colon, withdrawn at 80 cm (mid transverse) 2 more polyps were removed, at 45 cm and 40 cm 2 more polyps were removed, at 18 cm another polyp was removed, at 16 cm 2 more polyps were removed. All polyps were collected and sent to pathology.

No, CPT code 45385 should only be used once, as Snare technique include (both type of snare, Hot and Cold). So you can only bill 45385 once, if even both Hot and Cold Snare technique.
