bilateral 50590

Laurie Posted Mon 17th of September, 2018 10:56:54 AM
my question is, how do we bill a 50590 bilateral in a facility for facility billing ? Do we use a 50 modifier, or 2 units?

Hi Laurie,

50 modifier should be billed with CPT code 50590 for shock wave lithotripsy performed bilaterally. Medicare unlikely edits (MUE) of CPT code 50590 is 1 which means this code can be billed only once on a billed date of service. Hence, you can not bill for two units of CPT code 50590.

Hope, provided information would be helpful.
