Bifrontal craniectomy for subdural grid/strip implantation/and removal of grids

Deborah h Posted Sat 24th of October, 2015 16:12:00 PM

How would you code a bi-frontal craniectomy for bilateral subdural grid/strip implantation and later bi-frontal craniotomy for the removal of bilateral subdural grids. A 50 modifier is NOT applicable with both cpt codes 61533 or 61535, but the MUE is 2. Can you charge 61533, 61533-59 (implant), and 61535, 61535-59 (removal) or would just charge 61533 and 61535 once even through bilateral craniectomy(BIFRONAL BONE FLAP) and bilateral subdural grid placement; and for the removal as well. Please give supporting documentation.

61533, 61533-59 is not the correct pattern to bill. Use CPT 61533 for implantation of the electrode and CPT 61535 for removal of electrod, even if physician is performing it through bilateral approach at a time; whearas, if the timing is different then you can bill it twice on the basis of MUE. Both the codes cannot be billed together.
