Axillary Core Biopsy

Laura Posted Tue 21st of August, 2012 18:35:09 PM

For this procedure: The 12 o'clock position of the breast was examined, and findings were consistent with a mass. Because of the findings, a core biopsy of the right breast mass was performed. Core biopsy of the right axillary mass was performed. A core biopsy was performed on both masses with several cores obtained. Marker was placed at the area of right breast biopsy.

Would appropriate coding be: '21550'?, '19102'-51, '76942', '19295'?

I agree with your code sets as per the documentation provided.

Just noticed in CPT under 21550 (For needle biopsy of soft tissue, use 20206), so is 20206 instead of 21550 the appropriate code?

Hi Laura, Yes i missed it too. You are correct in using 20206 for core biopsy of the right axillary mass.
