hello, our physicians are wondering how we can capture this. I've done research and everything says to use 10021 for FNA of the abscess. Wondering if we could use the I&D of peritonsilar abscess code, 42700, with a reduced services modifier? Physicians are claiming these are always complicated, middle of the night cases, but then are only getting 1.27 RVu with the 10021.

Hi,

CPT code 10021 (Fine needle aspiration; without imaging guidance) will be used for pertonsilar abscess aspiration. The use of CPT code 42700 is applicable only where the incision is made using scalapel or a large bore needle and the drain is placed.

Hope thsi helps!

Further query is welcome.
