Arthrodesis Nonunion Dx code

Karen Posted Tue 23rd of June, 2015 09:28:15 AM

Surgeon did a revision arthrodesis toe, IP joint. The procedure code is 28755. His op note states the Dx is Arthrodesis Nonunion. What dx code should I use? 733.82 states Nonunion of Fx but this is not a fracture.

Well, yes you are correct, it is very tricky to use 733.82 when fracture is not there. It is suggested to code 996.49 if any implant is used, otherwise 998.9 seems appropriate. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the help, when I check supercode for a crosswalk for ICD9 neither of the above dx codes is listed there.

It is not necessary that you can get all the related ICD-9-CM crosswalk code with CPT. Those mentioned Crosswalk codes are the most frequently used. So you can bill the mentioned ICD-9 codes.
