Appropriate Turbinate Code

Kashonna Posted Mon 07th of October, 2019 16:30:33 PM
Could you please advise on the appropriate turbinate code? Attention was then turned to the inferior turbinates. They were medialized. They were injected with 3 cc of 1% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine. Anterior submucous resection was undertaken in a submucosal plane. Additional posterior volumetric reduction was undertaken using a Coblation wand on a setting of 6. The turbinates were then crushed and lateralized.

Hello Kashonna,

Thank you for your question.

As per the above provided documentation, since, submucosal resection was undertaken in a submucosal plane and posterior volumetric reduction was undertaken using a Coblation wand; the better choice of code will be 30802 (Ablation, soft tissue of inferior turbinates, unilateral or bilateral, any method (eg, electrocautery, radiofrequency ablation, or tissue volume reduction); intramural.

Note: The underlying difference between 30801 and 30802 is that; 30802 enters the submucosa and shrinks the inferior turbinate. 30801 involves a reduction of the size of the inferior turbinate in a more superficial manner and does not enter the submucosal soft tissue.

Hope that helps!
