Application of halo traction then couple days later placement of the halo vest

Deborah h Posted Fri 31st of July, 2015 13:56:27 PM

What cpt code(s) would you bill if on day 1 a halo traction (3 pounds) was done then on day 3 a halo vest was placed. Please give cpt codes for day 1 and day 3. Please give supporting documentation.

Deborah h Posted Fri 31st of July, 2015 14:01:14 PM

Also on day 1 the halo placed was with 6 or more pins.

Use CPT code 20661. As global day for this CPT code is 90 days, so you cannot bill this code again for 3rd day vest application of re-adjustment.

But wouldn't you code 20664 since it was 6 or more pins even though a vest wasn't put on at that time?

SuperCoder Answered Mon 03rd of August, 2015 10:53:26 AM

As it was 6 or more pins, but CPT code 20664 can only be used if patient has any thin skull osteology. Such as hydrocephalus or osteogenesis imperfecta. If your patient having any thin skull osteology, go for CPT code 20664.
