Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Cari Posted Tue 03rd of April, 2012 13:28:40 PM

Need clarification on two codes 22551 and 22554.

Is the 22554 used to code the approach for an arthrodesis that is being performed and is the 22551 used to code the actual arthrodesis.

Is there an approach code only?

Can you bill both of these codes together?

The basic difference between these two codes is decompression of spinal cord.
If only decompression is performed then report 63075 series codes.
If anterior arthrodesis is performed without decompression, report 22554.
Anterior Arthrodesis + Decompression - 22551
You should not report 22551 along with 22554 for the same vertebral level.
