How do I bill for MAC anesthesia requested for a thyroid nuclear scan for a thyroid mass due the patient's high level of anxiety? All of the codes that I tried in the 70000 series don't have an anesthesia crosswalk code.

Since, thyroid scan is usually not performed under anesthesia, there is no anesthesia crosswalk code for it.

You will have to use Unlisted code- 01999, Unlisted anesthesia procedure(s).

Also, you will have to send a letter of medical necessity to the payer with your claim explaining the justification of using MAC anesthesia.

Thanks !!
