Abscess status post right total knee

L Posted Sun 22nd of May, 2016 15:09:53 PM
Patient developed scar/abscess after a total right knee. Can you advise on a possible code for: Excision hypertrophic scar and ulceration consisting of an abscess of about 1.5 x 0.5 cm in length by width of the right knee incision. Thanks!

Thanks for your questions. Excision of scar is reported as excision of benign lesions, category 11400-11446, which includes simple repair. If repair is intermediate or complex, then you should report repair separately from the respective sections. In this case, size of scar is 1.5 x 0.5 cm (considering that margins are included in this excision size). So you should report CPT code 11402 including margins. Thanks.
