93228 & 93229

Kim Posted Fri 15th of February, 2019 13:54:20 PM
Should we be billing CPT 93229 as the date of placement of the monitor and 93228 as the date of the removal?
SuperCoder Answered Mon 18th of February, 2019 08:20:27 AM

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your question.

The code description for both the codes does not mention terms “placement” or “removal”. These codes are for external mobile cardiovascular telemetry with electrocardiographic recording and can be reported only once per 30 days.

Report 93228 for provider review and interpretation with report. Code 93229 represents the technical component of the service only, so you should not append modifier 26, Professional component, or TC, Technical component. Code 93229 is for technical support, which includes connection, instructions to the patient for use, attended surveillance, analysis, and transmission of daily and emergent data reports per provider protocol.

Please feel free to write if you have any question.

Thank you. I am still not clear what Date of Service to use for these codes?
SuperCoder Answered Tue 19th of February, 2019 06:21:00 AM

The date of service must be reported as the date the patient was initially placed on the monitor.

Hope it helps.
