Hello Marina,

Thank you for your question.

The official CPT® code 66174 descriptor states:

Transluminal dilation of aqueous outflow canal; without retention of device or stent.

In this procedure, the provider expands the aqueous outflow canal without retaining a device or stent to treat glaucoma.

When the patient is appropriately prepped and anesthetized, the provider makes a subconjunctival incision and exposes the sclera. He creates a scleral flap above the level of the ciliary body. He further dissects the scleral flap to expose the Descemet's membrane. He injects a balanced salt solution in the ostia of the canal for dilation, and then performs paracentesis of the anterior chamber. He further expands the canal and inserts a viscoelastic material through the catheter into the canal. He then removes the catheter and closes the conjunctiva using interrupted sutures.

Hope that helps.
