50230 Surgery

David Posted Mon 02nd of March, 2015 12:03:30 PM

For 50230, how can you bill when we have a PA assisting the doctor during this surgery, and then a provider from another group assisting for part of the surgery as well? We billed the PA charges with the AS modifier, and the other provider group billed using the 80 modifier. They are stating that their charges are denied because we billed incorrectly.
Thoughts? We believe that we are billing correctly.

Thank you for the query.
I think the modifier you are looking for is Modifier -81 which is used for minimal assistant at surgery. This includes MD, DO, and DPM provider types and is an assistant surgeon providing minimal assistance to the primary surgeon. This modifier may be used when more than one assistant is involved or if one person assists during a portion of the surgery. This modifier is not intended for use by non-physician assistants (e.g., RN, PA).

I hope this helps!
