can scope control of epistaxis be billed as bilateral?

SuperCoder Answered Thu 14th of July, 2011 14:36:24 PM

Modifier -50 (bilateral payment adjustment applies) for 31238 as per Medicare fee schedule data. If procedure is really performed equally on the opposite side of the body, you could append modifer -50 with the second code because dianostic endoscopy is a unilateral procedure. Before reporting modifier -50, check with your payer that how they will need to assign modifier -50 with the procedues. Some payers require service should be reported twice with modifier -50 to the second code and some require only once with modifier -50.
