Good morning, Can cpt code 21497 be listed to stabilize the jaws during a surgery and then removed at the end of the case? Example: the pt is having a nerve graft to the mouth and the jaws are wired together for stabilization? I guess I am trying to find out when it is appropriate to list 21497? Thank you for your help

Good morning.

Cpt code 21497, Interdental wiring, for condition other than fracture, can be described as the provider using interdental wiring to prevent movement of the jaws to allow healing for a jaw injury that does not involve a fracture, such as temporomandibular joint dislocation.

If the provider gives local anesthesia or removes interdental wiring, it is usually not reported separately.

Hope this helps. Thank you.
