2 separate procedure codes?

Lynn Posted Sat 18th of December, 2010 21:14:41 PM

Can I use 2 separate procedure codes as the only codes for an exploratory Laparotomy '49000' (separate procedure) and Enterolysis, freeing of intestinal adhesion (separate procedure) '44180-22' (modifier 22 as lysis of adhesions took 1-1/2 hrs) together as this was all that was done?

No you cannot use/bill 44180 and 49000 together, as per CCI edit Code 44180 is a column 2 code for 49000, These cannot be billed together in any circumstances. So you can report 49000 only in this situation.

Thank you Alex. Sorry, I don't know why I didn't look in edits myself. Now the question is would it be appropiate to add modifier 22 to the exploratory laparotomy for extensive lysis of adhesions?

Yes, you can bill this code with 22 modifier, provided substantial documents must be provided stating that the surgery took longer time due to lysis of adhesions.
