This code range includes CPT® Category III codes. The American Medical Association (AMA) maintains the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set.
CPT® Category III codes represent emerging technologies and services that may not have met the requirements to be adopted as Category I codes. Category III CPT® codes allow for the collection of data by providers, insurers, researchers, and health-policy experts about the services and procedures the codes describe.
The AMA releases Category III codes twice a year. If a relevant Category III code exists, you must report it, not an unlisted procedure code from Category I. These five-character codes end with the letter T. Note that AMA resources label these Category III codes rather than Category 3 codes.
Category III CPT® codes are temporary codes. They have a sunset (archive) date five years from their creation. A Category III code may change to a Category I code before the time is up. In some cases, the Category III code may receive an extension.
