Clarification:
Report 49424 When You Assess Abscess or Cyst

The June 2004 You Be the Coder titled "How Should We Report a G-Tube Patency Check?" stated that coders should report CPT 49424 (Contrast injection for assessment of abscess or cyst via previously placed drainage catheter or tube [separate procedure]) for a gastrostomy tube patency check, along with 76080 (Radiologic examination, abscess, fistula or sinus tract study, radiological supervision and interpretation) for the radiologist's supervision and interpretation. Our question did not mention that the patient had an abscess or cyst. However, you should only report 49424 if the radiologist assesses an abscess or cyst via the catheter or tube.
