Reader Questions: Look to 29862 for Arthroscopic Hip Repair

- Published on Fri, Jun 30, 2006
Question: Our surgeon treated a patient for femoral acetabular impingement with probable articular damage, with a tear to the posterior labrum. He documented left hip arthroscopy with chondroplasty of the acetabulum and debridement of fibrosed pulvinar tissue, as well as acetabuloplasty of the proximal femur. My surgeon tells me that this is a fairly new procedure. What should we report?

Oklahoma Subscriber Answer: You should report 29862 (Arthroscopy, hip, surgical; with debridement/shaving of articular cartilage [chondroplasty], abrasion arthroplasty, and/or resection of labrum]) for your surgeon's work.
The acetabuloplasty is a component of chondroplasty, and code 29862 includes the surgeon's work performing chondroplasty. And the fibrosed pulvinar tissue is likely a portion of the labrum.
