Payers Rarely Reimburse LUNA Procedures

From the Ob-Gyn Coding Alert
Extra Supplement on Endoscopic Procedures

Question: My physician did a laparoscopy with excision of endometriosis and a laparoscopic uterosacral nerve ablation (LUNA) procedure. How should we code a LUNA procedure? Georgia Subscriber Answer: You should report the LUNA by adding modifier -22 (Unusual procedural services) to the primary procedure. Keep in mind that this procedure will probably never have a separate CPT code because payers generally consider it investigational and it does not cure pelvic pain in the long run. Consequently, many payers will not reimburse for it at all.
