Not All Laparoscopic Hysterectomies Are the Same

From the Ob-Gyn Coding Alert
Extra Supplement on Endoscopic Procedures
Question: How should I report a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy? This is different from a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy (58550). Washington Subscriber Answer: A laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy means you have left the cervix in place, but you can code the procedure using 58550 (Laparoscopy, surgical; with vaginal hysterectomy with or without removal of tube[s], with or without removal of ovary[s] [laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy]) because it is the code that most closely describes the procedure. Some payers may require you to add modifier -52 (Reduced services) to this code, while others may request that you use 58578 (Unlisted laparoscopy procedure, uterus).
