Reader Question:

Epidural Placements

Question: Our group has CRNAs who are responsible for epidural placements. Should we bill only for the time the CRNA is face to face with the patient, or can we bill for the entire time the patient has the epidural and is being monitored?

Answer: This issue should be addressed specifically with your local carriers. There is no one way to bill, so each group should contact the carriers they work with most often and ask them in advance for their version of proper coding in this situation. The two most common scenarios are billing for the entire time the patient is being monitored, but some require that you bill only for face to face time. Check with your local carriers to see which method they require.
