  1. Is the removal of a Word Catheter included in the insertion or can an E&M be billed for this?

    Thank you

  2. Hi Cheryl.

Typically a Word catheter is used for I&D of a lesion or cyst, such as a Bartholin's cyst. The insertion is included in the I&D code you would report -- typically, 56420. The cath is left in for continued drainage for a period of time.

Based on what I've read, the removal is incuded in the original 56420 coding. Take a look at this coding advice for the Word catheter I found: http://www.cookmedical.com/wh/content/mmedia/WH-BM-WCRG-EN-201108.pdf.

    I hope this helps.
